Artist Statement
As a Jewish mystic from an immigrant family, Katya’s creative practice developed as a healing modality and as an element of their spiritual rituals. Their work and research inquiries are often inspired by the natural phenomena, folk mythology and interpretations of the divine, as well as elements of their queer, neurodivergent and Russian-American identity. Katya’s work explores embodiment through language as well as visual arts, sound and performance, collaging across mediums to produce poems, audiovisual readings, works on canvas, hanging tapestries, performances and art books. True to the ethos of collage processes, these works explore the fragmentation of selfhood, and celebrate the role of creative expression and relationships (with ourselves, with others, with our ancestors and environment) in its reconstruction.
